Blog Assignment #9

frustrated male teacher with his head against the chalkboard

What I've Learned This Year:

This was a post written by Mr. McClung that is about his first year of teaching. He is giving advice to future teachers but it can also be good advice for current teachers. Mr. McClung wrote about how he was thinking all throughout college about himself, what he could do to keep himself up to standard and what his superiors were expecting of him. When he began teaching in his first year he realized that he needed to be student focused, not focused on himself. He needed to be sure that the students were comprehending his lessons and were learning. Mr. McClung also said that he learned not to get upset so much over lessons or activities that didn't go the way he planned, there is always room for improvements in every lesson. Another important lesson he learned was to listen to his students and try to learn more about their personal lives, this helps to build respect for each other. The students and teacher respect each other.

  1. Whitney,

I definitely agree that respect is an essential aspect in a classroom. If a student respects the teacher, he or she will most likely be willing to participate and succeed. To earn respect, teachers should listen, communicate, encourage, and care. I also think it is important to be student focused because they are the reasons we have become teachers. Well, I want to be a teacher to help students achieve in life. Flexibility is also important; however, we do need structure to keep our classroom well managed. I do not think Mr. McClung was saying we do not need structure, but we should simply be willing to change our plans at any time.

  2. Whitney,

I really agree with everything that you commented on because I think that this post would really help future teachers as well as current teachers because it gives so much insight into what teaching is really about and I feel that teachers can really connect with Mr. McClung. I feel that respect is important and it's a must in the classroom

  3. I thought his article was great with some really sound advice! And I agree with the fact that teachers should be student focused for that is the reason why one should become a teacher, is to focus purely on what the student is taking away from the lessons taught, and if they aren't what can we do to make that happen. Also, being flexible is important, I think, because you never know what the day will bring! Mr. McClung is a great educator, he seems really involved and really cares about his students.
